Wood pellet travel from North American forests to Belgian furnaces<\/h2>\n

Check out Greenpeace Belgium<\/a>\u2019s nifty\u00a0tool<\/a>\u00a0which demonstrates the potential dangers and questionable sustainability of wood pellets that are being used to fuel power plants in Belgium by companies like Electrabel<\/a>, RWE<\/a> and E.ON<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The tool traces all the different steps, from\u00a0wood pellet production in North America to burning in Belgian furnaces. The journey begins in forests which are harvested in the\u00a0US and Canada, then\u00a0taken to facilities which convert the\u00a0cut logs to wood pellets, which are then packed and\u00a0make a trans-Atlantic journey towards Europe, and then land in Belgium to burn for energy. A questionable industry considering that\u00a0to support a\u00a0single biomass plant of 250\u00a0MW,\u00a0it takes about 800 000 tonnes of pellets per year and 30 naval voyages.<\/p>\n
