A nonsensical practice in the context of the climate and biodiversity crisis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The MEPs decision will determine the future of our forests: voting for more subsidies for bioenergy will increase the pressure on EU forests, already damaged by over-logging. <strong>About half of the forest harvest is already burned for energy.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Earlier in the year the parliament\u2019s environment committee (ENVI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/fr\/2022\/05\/18\/important-step-towards-protecting-forests-food-security-taken-by-the-eu-environment-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recommended to end support for the burning of virgin wood<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Now, we are asking the ITRE committee to support ENVI\u2019s recommendation and to enshrine the \u201ccascading principle\u201d (= prioritising material use of wood over burning it) in the legislation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We believe our forests must remain standing to support vital biodiversity and keep CO<sub>2<\/sub> sequestered to help EU climate goals.\u00a0The annual \u20ac12 billion of subsidies for bioenergy should instead be invested in real renewables like solar, wind, and geothermal.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our voting recommendations for the ITRE vote on RED<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-medium-font-size\">The EU needs to protect and restore forests, for people, for biodiversity and for the climate\u00a0&#8211; not log them for energy.\u00a0<strong>MEPs, please vote to protect our future:<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-dee13502f2811a3b47a2778a7a12c095 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background: linear-gradient(135deg,#5bdd89 6%,#6be47d 100%); color: #000000; padding: 2em;\">\r\n<h2 id=\"single\" class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size: 40px;\">SUPPORT<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>1.\u00a0 Definition of Primary Woody Biomass and Secondary Woody Biomass\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\" style=\"font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>ENVI AMs 33 &amp; 34 &#8211; Art 2.2 (new) &amp; ENVI AM 8 (recital 4)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>The distinction between primary and secondary woody biomass allows for stopping support for\u00a0burning primary wood for energy,\u00a0the most valuable wood in forest biomass.\u00a0 This definition is an integral part of ENVI\u2019s Opinion on support schemes and should be supported by ITRE.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-css-opacity has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"background-color: #000000; color: #000000;\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>2.\u00a0 Cascading Principle<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\" style=\"font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>Art 3.3.3<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Support the full application of the cascading principle of a hierarchy of use for wood, respecting wood as a valuable economic resource and using wood according to its highest material use &#8211;\u00a0first priority for long lived products.\u00a0 ITRE CA2 covers the application of this principle via an implementing act instead of\u00a0the proposed\u00a0delegated act.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-elements-d475446bb0e4e7f73ec29425db687b67 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"background: linear-gradient(135deg,#ec5746 0%,#e65353 100%); color: #000000; padding: 2em;\">\r\n<h2 id=\"single\" class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size: 40px;\">REJECT<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>3.
