They are home to incredible fauna and flora. They provide us with food, material, inspiration and peace. Old forests have been around for centuries. They are full of stories they want to share, if you will listen. And despite being betrayed by human exploitation, and fires, they grow back, again and again, if we let them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the rate of human activities in the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;century does not respect the time of forests. If we don\u2019t look closely, forests will be silenced for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the voices of our local Partners, our series \u201cof clearcuts and birds\u201d tells some of the stories of Finnish, Estonian and Latvian forests and of their incredible biodiversity, as well as the hard consequences of their exploitations, (in)directly driven by the EU\u2019s support for bioenergy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>THE STATE OF FORESTS IN EUROPE<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, it is difficult to provide a proper overview of the state of forests in the EU, because forestry policy is primarily a national competence. The collection of data might differ from a country to another, and the issues are not the same in different locations. Only a few primary forests remain since human activities affect&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eca.europa.eu\/Lists\/ECADocuments\/SR21_21\/SR_Forestry_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">more than 95 % of EU forests<\/a>.&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/forest.eea.europa.eu\/topics\/forest-and-nature\/introduction\" target=\"_blank\">36 million hectares of forest area<\/a>&nbsp;are part of the Natura 2000 protection network. Unfortunately, it is not an absolute protection as some of these forests are still facing clearcuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foresteurope.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Summary_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The 2020 State of Europe\u2019s Forests report<\/a>&nbsp;determines that the condition of European forests is on average deteriorating. Looking at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/publications\/state-of-nature-in-the-eu-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the European Environment Agency report \u2018State of nature in the EU 2013-2018<\/a>\u2019, which is based on areas protected under the EU Birds and Habitats Directives, 85% of protected forests in the EU are in poor or bad condition,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eca.europa.eu\/Lists\/ECADocuments\/SR21_21\/SR_Forestry_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;54% and 31%<\/a>&nbsp;respectively. The worst scenarios can be expected for unprotected or less protected areas which depend on national law or on the good will of private forest owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Forests host&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eca.europa.eu\/Lists\/ECADocuments\/SR21_21\/SR_Forestry_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 90 % of the world\u2019s terrestrial biodiversity<\/a>. It should be a duty to take care of them. Biodiversity is richer in older forests, as they have a more significant volume of deadwood and greater structural complexity of trees and plants of different ages.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pracownia.org.pl\/upload\/filemanager\/pracownia.org.pl\/Publikacje\/Forests-to-burn-Kolbusz-Mikos-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20 to 40% of forests species<\/a>&nbsp;require the presence of decaying wood at a stage of their life cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BIOENERGY OR THE HUNGER FOR WOOD<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Bioenergy is energy produced by burning fuels made from organic materials, such as wood, agricultural crops, or organic waste. At the EU level,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/repository\/bitstream\/JRC122719\/jrc-forest-bioenergy-study-2021-final_online.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60% of bioenergy is produced by burning wood<\/a>. In 2018,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eca.europa.eu\/Lists\/ECADocuments\/SR21_21\/SR_Forestry_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost half of the woody biomass<\/a>&nbsp;used in the EU was consumed as energy. Bioenergy production significantly affects forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Renewable Energy Directive (RED) is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eca.europa.eu\/Lists\/ECADocuments\/SR21_21\/SR_Forestry_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a key feature of EU climate policy aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>&nbsp;by stimulating the consumption of energy from renewable sources. Energy sources promoted by the RED are being subsidised with billions of euros by EU countries as an alternative to fossil fuels and a solution to tackle climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the crux of bioenergy is: burning wood emits CO<sub>2<\/sub>. By cutting down our forests to burn them for energy, we release CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;in the atmosphere, accelerating the climate crisis. Even if new trees can regrow and reabsorb the emissions, it takes time. Time that we do not have. \u201cReplacing\u201d forests takes decades, even centuries, depending on the age of the burnt trees. Meanwhile,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.eu\/?2128466%2F500-scientists-tell-EU-to-end-tree-burning-for-energy\" target=\"_blank\">the emitted CO<sub>2<\/sub>&nbsp;continues to increase global warming<\/a>. From a climate perspective, we are literally burning our carbon sinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/50-028-Wood-pile_Estonia_Karl-Adami.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[5202]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" data-id=\"5176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/50-028-Wood-pile_Estonia_Karl-Adami-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5176\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/01-002-Clear-cut-area_Finland_Karl-Adami.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[5202]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" data-id=\"5170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/01-002-Clear-cut-area_Finland_Karl-Adami-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5170\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/07-018-Clear-cut-area_Finland_Karl-Adami.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[5202]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" data-id=\"5172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/07-018-Clear-cut-area_Finland_Karl-Adami-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5172\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/12-003-Clear-cut-area_Finland_Karl-Adami.jpg\" rel=\"PrettyPhoto[5202]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" data-id=\"5174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eubioenergy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/12-003-Clear-cut-area_Finland_Karl-Adami-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5174\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.jrc.ec.europa.eu\/repository\/bitstream\/JRC122719\/jrc-forest-bioenergy-study-2021-final_online.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">At least 37% (and up to 51%) of the wood used for bioenergy in the EU is sourced directly from forests<\/a>. It is called \u201cprimary woody biomass\u201d. Clearcutting is a compatible practice with bioenergy. The \u201cbest\u201d trees will be used for materials or as pulpwood, and the rest will go to energy production. But while this burnt wood is considered to be of low economic value, it can play a major role for forest biodiversity as dead wood or\u2026 living forest. The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/forestdefenders.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/FDA-Future-on-Fire-April-5-2022_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">investigative report of Forest Defender Alliance<\/a>&nbsp;shows that large tree trunks are also used to produce tiny wood pellets and energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If any more proof was needed, the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gfw.global\/3cx0dtU\" target=\"_blank\">Global Forest Watch\u2019s map<\/a>&nbsp;shows the forest cover loss since 2010. In sustainably managed forests, the \u201closs\u201d will eventually show up as \u201cgain, as young trees get large enough to achieve canopy closure.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A JOURNEY TO FINNISH, ESTONIAN AND LATVIAN FORESTS<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While bioenergy subsidies and incentives are decided at EU-level, their consequences in the field are tangible. Each country situation is different and faces their own issues, but the hunger for wood is common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/adamikarl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Karl Adami<\/a>&nbsp;is an Estonian photographer who has dedicated his work to forests and birds. He published two books about forests and is collaborating on the Estonian television\u2019s nature show \u2018Osoon\u2019 for the past ten years. \u201cThe more you know, the more you care\u201d, says Karl, \u201cThe more you realize how fragile or demanding some species are and how much time is necessary for them to have a suitable environment, the more you become protective of old-growth forests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karl is worried about the situation in Estonia: \u201cIn the past six years, the logging has increased significantly. What irritates me the most is probably the constant downgrading of deadwood. The mainstream narrative is that deadwood, both standing and fallen, would just rot if not removed from forest. But thousands of species are linked to dead wood. For some forest birds it is a source of food or provides the ideal site for nesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For BirdLife, Karl travelled through Finland, Estonia, and Latvia to take pictures of forests and clearcut areas that can be found all around the countries.
